Hey there, trailblazers and yogis (or aspiring yogis)! Let’s talk about breath—that life force that fuels our bodies and spirits. Ever feel like you need something more to get you through your day, like a coffee or a nap (or both?) Have you thought about trying a deeper inhale? In this blog, we’ll explore five poses that’ll create more space in your lungs and remind you to breathe more deeply, both on and off the mat.

A proactive yoga practice can help you to connect with your breath so that when you’re faced with a challenge, you can call on the power of your breath. The great thing about yoga is that it’s not just about pretzel poses or touching your toes (though those can be fun too!). It’s about reconnecting with your inner badass and rediscovering the magic of a conscious breath and then using your practice off the mat to regain presence and a sense of peace.

Here are a few asanas to incorporate in your practice that help open up the lungs and boost your immune system. Hold them for as long as you can comfortably breathe deeply. Remember to focus on the expansion of the lungs as you breathe.

1️⃣ COBRA or UP DOG

2️⃣ BRIDGE or WHEEL

3️⃣ FISH POSE

4️⃣ SEATED HALF SPINAL TWIST

5️⃣ STANDING FORWARD FOLD

These Poses:

  • Help you open, stretch, and strengthen your chest, throat, and lungs
  • Help in the breakdown of mucous in the lungs and expel it from the body.
  • Help you gain more control of your breath
  • Increase the intake and circulation of oxygen – aids in respiratory dysfunction such as coughs, allergies, and asthma
  • Increase energy
  • Improve mental calmness
  • Stimulate your lungs from all sides of the body

These poses are more than fancy stretches; they’re lung liberators! They open your chest, stretch your diaphragm, and even help dissolve blockages. Plus, you’ll boost your oxygen intake, calm any lingering anxiety, and unlock a hidden reserve of energy.

So, whether you’re a seasoned yogi or stressed at work and seeking a deeper breath, join us on this journey. Remember, every breath is a gift, and on the yoga mat, we find strength and opening through the connection of breath, movement and mindfulness.

Namaste, and breathe on!
